Nestled within a one-acre coconut grove on the outskirts of Kozhikode, Taara is a home born from a simple yet profound brief: "a home for us and the earth." Designed by Sapiens Collective, the residence reflects a conscious decision by its owners to step away from the pace of urban life and embrace a slower, more grounded way of living.

The couple chose this site nearly an hour away from the city, drawn to its gentle undulations, dense coconut canopy, and the opportunity to raise their children amidst nature. Rather than maximizing built space, the vision was to create a modest home surrounded by room to explore, wander, and grow. The landscape itself became an essential part of the project—allowing childhood to unfold outdoors and everyday life to remain connected to the rhythms of the land.

For me, documenting Taara became less about photographing architecture and more about photographing life. The challenge was not simply to capture walls, roofs, and spaces, but to reveal the moments and relationships that transform a house into a home. This approach resonated deeply with the philosophy of Sapience Collective, whose belief that homes are meant to be lived in rather than styled shaped the entire process of documentation.

The architecture embraces this idea through its simplicity. A modest footprint, generous common spaces, and a strong relationship with the outdoors encourage interaction, togetherness, and shared experiences. The house feels less like a collection of rooms and more like a framework for everyday life—designed to strengthen connections between family members while remaining rooted in its natural surroundings.

 

Throughout the documentation, I focused on the subtle details that define the spirit of the home: morning light filtering through the trees, the quiet presence of the landscape, traces of daily routines, and the spaces where family life unfolds. Rather than staging moments, the photographs and film seek to preserve them—capturing the house as it exists in time, inhabited and alive.

Through this series, Taara emerges not merely as a residence but as a reflection of a conscious choice: to build less, live closer to nature, and create a home that is deeply missed whenever one is away from it.
