Bridge House
Captured in the rugged wilderness of Karjat, Maharashtra, this series documents my experience photographing the Bridge House by architect Vinu Daniel a residence that stands as a livable bridge suspended across a 7-meter-deep gorge shaped by the TATA spillway. Every project brings new challenges, but this one was especially thrilling: a chance to photograph something otherworldly, architecture whispered into existence by dreams and wilderness.
Designed within strict site constraints, the Bridge House is a 100-foot suspension structure composed of four hyperbolic parabolas, using minimal steel for tensile strength and a unique thatch–mud composite for compression. Resting on just four footings and inspired by the scales of a pangolin, the structure floats between thick foliage like a camouflaged cocoon—lightweight, thermally efficient, and deeply respectful of its natural surroundings. The mud plaster strengthens the form while keeping pests out, allowing the building to function as both a secure dwelling and a living ecosystem.
For me, photographing this project was an unforgettable journey. Soft light revealed the gentler contours of the bridge; harsh sunlight exposed its dramatic geometry. At dawn, it stood quietly over the gorge; by night, it transformed into a glowing presence woven into the forest canopy. Every shift in light reshaped its character, offering endless moments of architectural storytelling through photography.
Inside, a central oculus opens the home to the sky, while four bedrooms frame views of the surrounding forest and stream. Jute screens, mesh panels, and reclaimed ship-deck wood flooring reinforce the project’s commitment to adaptive reuse and sustainable farmhouse design.
The Bridge House is a powerful reminder that constraints can ignite innovation. Through this photo series, I hope to highlight a structure that does not dominate its landscape but moves through it—bridging landforms, light, and the delicate balance between human habitation and nature.
